One of my favorite activities this summer in Chicago has been visiting the farmer’s markets around the city. Every week, vendors from around Illinois and the neighboring states come together to sell the best, literally of-the-moment seasonal produce. I frequent the Chicago Loop Farmer’s market which runs on Thursdays (more details at the end of the post).
I’m fascinated every time I visit. Week to week as the season progresses, different fruits, vegetables and flowers arrive. Some of the produce is unlike anything I’ve ever come across – like these purple and yellow sunflowers, Brussels sprouts on the stems, multi-colored corn cobs that you see in the photos. You’ll see every color and texture nature has to offer. There are also several bakery stalls, a famous Raclette station, a honey and jam station with dozens of varieties and more.
Walking around the Chicago Loop farmer’s market is one of the best summer-time things to do in Chicago for everyone, from children to grandparents. As I’ve read and understood more about food, I find it more important to know where my food is coming from and what’s in my food. Buying fresh and local isn’t always possible, but initiatives like these make it easier and make more people aware. The vendors are usually happy to chat about the produce and the best ways to use the unique vegetables they bring in.
There are several other well-known markets in the city – the biggest ones are the Logan Square Farmer’s Market on Sundays and Green City Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Some of the larger local vendors have stalls at several of these markets.
On the worst winter days in Chicago, long-time Chicago residents often told me, “once you experience summer in Chicago, you’ll know why we stick around here winter after winter”. Once the little buds and greens of spring started to come up, I understood what they meant. The city transforms in the summer! Don’t miss visiting the farmer’s market before the leaves begin to fall and Autumn rolls around.
The Chicago Loop Farmer’s Market, also known as Daley Plaza Farmer’s Market, is located at 50 W. Washington Street (between Dearborn and Clark St) in the Chicago Loop. The market runs on Thursdays from May 10-October 25, 2018 from 7am-3pm. Avoid going past 2:30pm as most of the vendors are ready to wrap up by then. Visit their website here.
